Recall Tony May

In his attempt to implement a personal agenda, Tony May has compromised the pillars of public office, thereby eroding the trust of the Garfield Re-2 Community in the School Board.

Grounds for Recall

With high hopes from the Garfield Re-2 Community and after 2 years in office, Tony May has unfortunately been an unfit School Board President and Board Member.  His conduct is bringing the School District to its foundational limits and threatening our communities.  Recalling Tony May will bring his conduct and actions into democratic light for the betterment of the Garfield Re-2.

Petition Grounds

Mr. Tony May should be recalled from office as a school director of Garfield School District Re-2, District E on the following grounds:

  1. Mr. May has repeatedly misused his position as school director to marginalize, disregard and bully parents, staff and community members with whom he disagrees.
  2. Mr. May’s actions as a board member, and former board president are highly partisan. Such actions jeopardize the ability of the Garfield RE-2 School District to navigate public education systems and supports, and they compromise established relationships and funding opportunities that the District relies on.
  3. Mr. May uses his position to bully staff and board members during public sessions.
  4. Mr. May blatantly disregards District policies and processes, resulting in costly operational failures that jeopardize the District’s ability to serve its core mission

The foregoing misconduct and failures are egregious and unacceptable and render Mr. May unfit to continue as a school director, an office which requires significant leadership qualities, including, but not limited to fairness, composure, compassion, bipartisanship, understanding and judgment

Objectives

Respect.

Tony May has repeatedly bullied, intimidated, and marginalized his fellow School Board Members, Garfield Re-2 Staff, Parents, and Community Members. His actions have driven multiple School Board members to resign, and staff members currently live in fear of reprimand and retaliation, making it difficult for them to carry out their duties effectively. Additionally, Tony May has shown a lack of respect for speakers and employees by purposely mispronouncing their names and belittling the topics presented. Regardless of political affiliation or worldview, this behavior is unbecoming of any public official, especially a local School Board Member, and is intolerable.

Transparency.

Tony May’s actions while School Board President and Board Member have been very concerning to the Garfield Re-2 Community. He has deliberately hid and concealed his efforts to unilaterally push his personal preferences on the community, which have been hidden from various stakeholders, including Garfield Re-2 Staff, other School Board Members, the Press, and the Community at Large. Despite being pressed repeatedly, he has declined to comment publicly on topics of utmost concern to the community. Only after Colorado Open Records Act requests were initiated, did his true communications get revealed. These communications have shown extensive and in-depth conversations with politically motivated actors who live far from the Garfield Re-2 School District. This lack of transparency is unacceptable for any democratically elected official and must be corrected immediately.

Community.

Tony May has abused his administrative role as School Board President to attempt to silence district-facilitated community input. Additionally, he has utilized his voting interest to ignore this same community input without any justification. Tony May has manipulated established Garfield Re-2 policies that ensure inclusion and buy-in of the larger Community. Additionally, Tony has deflected and attempted to confuse the public on critical School District functions for the advancement of his personal agenda. This disregard of community input only undermines its stake in the School District as an institution as well as undermining the greater democratic values our society holds most dear.
